Level 4 Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling

This is a professional qualification aimed at those who wish to be recognised and practice as a professional counsellor.  The course aims to create a reflective practitioner who is competent in the knowledge, understanding and application of counselling skills within the framework of a therapeutic relationship.
 
This competence will be underpinned by a deep understanding of core therapeutic model, which for this course is the Person Centred Model of Carl Rogers. In the first year students with also be introduced to Existential Therapy.  In the second year of the course, students have the option of choosing a model of counselling to study further.  
 
Integral to the course is 100 hours of supervised placement within an agency setting.
 
This level 4 course is designed to be the first stage of a structured and systematic training for individuals wishing to continue their professional development in counselling through ongoing Continued Professional Development and/or access to a Foundation Degree in Counselling

What are the hours of study?
Your learning day will begin at 9.30am and end at 4.30pm for the first year.

What will I study?
There are seven mandatory units of study:

  • Working ethically, safely and professionally as a counsellor
  • Working within a counselling relationship
  • Working with client diversity in counselling work
  • Working within a user-centred approach to counselling
  • Working with self-awareness in the counselling process
  • Working within a coherent framework of counselling theory and skills
  • Working self-reflectively as a counsellor
 
How will I be assessed?       
Each unit of study has assessment criteria which need to be met (using a range of assessment strategies such as case studies, reports, essays, research activities, counselling placement(s) and individual and group presentations in order for candidates to successfully complete the course. ·        

To progress onto year 2 candidates must meet all the assessment criteria of year. This qualification is internally and externally assessed and externally moderated·        

The Counselling Placement Assessment File is completed as an e-portfolio and assessed externally by the Awarding Body 
 
Entry requirements

Applicants must be 21 years of age or over
  • Hold a Level Three Certificate/Diploma in Counselling Skills/Studies
  • Progression from level three to level four is not necessarily automatic.  Applicants have to evidence their suitability to undertake this level four qualification and provide an academic reference from their Level 3 Counselling Tutor.

Will I need a reference?
Yes, you will need a reference from your Level 3 counsellor tutor.  We will send this out, once you are accepted onto the course.  We will not accept reference forms directly from applicants.

What next?
Completion of this course is the first step in ongoing continuous professional development and career pathway as a counselling practitioner.  The successful candidate can be deemed as being a professionally qualified counsellor.  Those who complete may wish to progress on to further study at Degree level or in a specialist field of counselling such as working with young children, bereavement or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
 
Additional information
You are required to complete 40 hours of personal therapy (approx. £40). 
  • BACP student membership, and fee for DBS certification,
  • Contribution to the cost of a Self-Awareness Development activity offered internally or externally. 
  • This is a vocational course that requires 100% attendance
  • This course is not designed to be used in any way for personal therapy
  • We do not accept applications from partners and those in close relationships
  • If you are working with children or adolescents (up to age 17) you will be able to count up to 30 hours towards the 100 hours total. This counselling will need to be provided within an agency setting and within a service framework that includes both a line manager and clinical supervision.
  • Personal development: You will be required to arrange and complete forty sessions of personal counselling; comprised of 20 sessions in year one and 20 sessions in year two.
 
How much does it cost?
The cost of study per year is £3,800 plus £339* awarding body registration.
Your student fees include weekly group supervision and placement hours with our agency.
 
*The cost of awarding body registration increases yearly and registration needs to paid each year.
 
Will I need to pay a deposit?
Yes, you will need to pay a £600 deposit once you have been offered a place and you have accepted the place.  In the event you do not wish to proceed with the course before the course start date, your CPCAB Candidate registration will be refunded.  Once the course has begun, you will not be entitled to a refund.
Please note: should you choose to leave the course at any time once the course has begun, you will still be liable for the full course fee.     
 
Can I pay my fee by Direct Debit?
Yes you can.  Once you have paid your deposit and have been accepted onto the course. We will arrange to send you a link for the completion of our online direct debit mandate.  A further 10 payments of £353.90 will be collected on the last day of each month.

Do you offer student finance?
Unfortunately not but we can offer students the opportunity to pay by Instalments via direct debit.

Year 2, Level 4 CPCAB Students

We also offer places to students who have taken a gap year and wish to return to their second level of study on the CPCAB Level 4 i Therapeutic Counselling.

To qualify a full satisfactory reference must be provided by your last place of study.
